There are many ways to go wrong with a movie like cheesy romance, predictable characters, and terrible special effects, and 2008's Twilight did just about every single one of them. Based on the #1 New York Times Bestseller and written by Stephenie Meyer, Twilight was turned into a movie that had teenage girls rushing to the theaters, and teenage boys running in the opposite direction. The movie starred the incredibly awkward, Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) and movie-made vampire heartthrob, Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen. The movie, Twilight, proves that any book can be turned into a movie even though some books should stay within the pages.
Twilight starts out with Bella moving from Arizona to Forks, Washington to live with her dad, Charlie (Billy Burke. There, Bella meets Edward Cullen in her science class, and their creepy chemistry stays throughout the entire movie. In the middle of the movie, Bella learns that Edward is a vampire, but he isn't your typical vampire. His skin sparkles in the sun, and he has the ability of read minds. He can also run fast and has strength like Superman. The over originality of the movie makes any person want to tell someone about it, but Bella is so intrigued in Edward and vampires that she wants to be just like him and doesn't tell anyone. She is not even scared of him at all, even though, Edward told her that he wants to suck her blood the most because he cannot read her mind.
With the acting of Kristen Stewart and the character of Robert Pattinson, Twilight turns for the worst. Kristen Stewart is so awkward that she cannot even answer a question without making a weird noise beforehand, and she keeps her mouth open the entire movie. She never looks happy or excited either. When she finds out that Edward wants her, she doesn't react. She just stares at him like usual. She is pale too. Shouldn't someone who is supposed to be from Arizona be even a little tan? I guess she is pale, so she can blend in with the crowd.
In addition, Edward Cullen is a frightening vampire. He became a vampire when he was seventeen, but vampires stop aging. He is about 110 years old which is way too old to be still going to high school. He watches Bella sleep too and stares at her all the time. In fact, their whole romance is based on staring at each other and gazing at each other's awkward behaviors.
If their acting and characters aren't bad enough, the special effect is way off. Vampires can run faster than cheetahs, but the effect makes it look like they're in slow motion. Vampires can jump high too, but anyone can see that they used wires because the jumping looks awkward. The sparkle effect on their skin looks off too. It isn't like a shimmering diamond. It's a sparkle of uneven snow that the sun is shining on that makes it look fake.
The setting isn't right too. I get what the director was going for. Forks, Washington is an average town with average people until one day when Bella Swan shows up, and the whole movie changes. However, the place is so pale and boring it makes Bella's pale skin fit in. The vampires even have to travel to a different place for the fight scenes which are darker.
Twilight is just the first installment of the saga, and if the first movie didn't want you to watch the rest, then there is no hope. The storyline gets even crazier, and Bella becomes more obsessed with vampires that there's no hope of getting her acting career any better.
